I am new to CFS2 and I was trying to make a mission using some of the really great ships that Usio has designed.
I noticed that when I tried to add a Takao class cruiser to the mission, a carrier icon appeared and I could only rename the cruiser using carrier names.
I also noticed similar problems with a battleship.
Is there any way of changing this?

I did notice that there is a line in the DP file
[MISC_DATA]
unit_family=7
category=13
allegiance=4
min_speed=0
cruise_speed=30
max_speed=67
entered_service=6/1/32

Would this have something to do with it?

Yes, Stuart.   This ship's type has been defined as an aircraft carrier with the unit family and category 13 entries contained in the MISC section of the DP file. 

To correct this simply open the DP of a stock cruiser and replace the family and category numbers in your Takao DP with those. 

The Takao was probably originally setup as a carrier so that she could launch catapult aircraft.  8-)
