Becoming an Aircraft Designer

Postby NoChaos » Wed Jul 09, 2003 9:07 am

Hi,
I would really like to get into designing aircraft but i have no idea where to start.

What i would like to know is do i need to be some sort of computer technician or something to do it?

Or is there anything i can read that will teach me from absolute scratch?
Ahahahahahahah ha ha ha ahhh.......

Hi NoChaos. Most people seem to think aircraft designing is somehow romantic. In reality it can be boring, frustrating & downright hard work.

You don't say which sim you would be designing for. This is important before giving specific advice on the various options & available design programs. These will cost you except for Gmax which is only suitable for CFS2, FS2002 & CFS3 so far.

I would suggest making yourself familiar with all aspects of the sim structure before thinking about designing an aircraft yourself. Have a go at all the other disciplines you will need to know. Creating the visual model is only a small part of it. Any self-respecting aircraft designer needs to know all about repainting textures, editing panels, AIR & DP files & so many other little tricks. There are many free programs posted in the design sections to practice these skills.

Please don't think I'm trying to discourage you. If you're set on taking the plunge, tell us which sim this is for & I'll try to help. If it involves programs I'm not familiar with, I'm sure someone else will jump in.

I would be doing it for CFS2 & CFS3 because they r the only 2 that i own.

Is there any programs or tutorials that will explain to me everything that is involved in making them?

OK. Without the Gamepack included only with FS2002 Pro, designing aircraft for CFS2 will cost you. CFS3 might be the best option. I suggest you download Gmax & Gmax Help here. http://www.discreet.com/products/gmax/gmaxconsumer/downloads_text.html
Read the tute & play around with Gmax. You will need the instructions & software included with the Aircraft, Vehicle & Building SDK to export an aircraft for CFS3. http://microsoftgamesinsider.com/CFSInsider/Tools/default.htm

CFS3 uses a completely different format to the other M$ sims. I know very little about it, except that designing aircraft for it is more difficult. The lack of available CFS3 3rd party aircraft speaks for itself. I suggest you visit the Aircraft Design & CFS3 boards on this forum for more advice. Read through the existing topics first.
