What difference does 64bit make?

Everybody knows that 64bit is better than 32bit, right?

Only in a generic way, actually.

I've mentioned that I can now fly New York City X WITHOUT out of memory crashes, and that got everybody excited.

Yeah, that's one of the things to be expected, big deal.

But here is a real improvement that is VERY clear to see.

When looking at these two pictures you have to know a few things.
1 - Although Orbx has Jackson Hole Airport scenery, it IS NOT available to Prepar3d V4, yet. Not to mention that I don't have it anyway.
2 - The first picture is Prepar3d V3 with all the major Orbx North American add-ons, excepting Jackson Hole.
3 - Other than the basic North American OpenLC NONE of what I have in the V3 version is available for this area in V4.
4 - Orbx says that their V4 scenery is being adapted to 64bit.

In short, the Orbx scenery IS 64bit scenery, but at the moment it's a basic, OpenLC, scenery, NOT a highly developed region.

Are you sure ? These are not the default rock textures in the v4 screenshot, are they ?

That's it. The only scenery that I've dragged and dropped were some BlueSkyScenery Death Valley, and the New York City X files. And they were just that, drag & drop. I haven't installed any other scenery.

Prepar3d V4, about 25 miles west of Boulder Colorado airport 1V5. Altitude 12,720 feet

As far as I know, this area isn't within any special Orbx scenery area, just openLC

Immediately west of Revelstoke, Canada airport CYRV. Altitude 6,290 feet.

Pretty much the middle of no where in Canada.

Image

South of Flugplatz St. Stephan, Switzerland LSTS. Altitude 9,690 feet

Switzerland looks REALLY good compared to FSX/P3d V3!

I feel pity for the big tube flyers, high above all of this great scenery.

I think that the term is "losers"

P.S. - Prepar3D Tweak Assistant (PTA) is being used EVERY TIME that I use Prepar3d, either V3 or V4.

One last shot from the far side of the earth so there is no doubt that this is not "special" Orbx scenery.

Let me introduce you to Yushan, the tallest mountain is Taiwan at 12,966 feet. Not that the plane is that high, though. :D

There's no question about it, 64bit allows for a greater range of textures. And remember V4 is a newborn baby. THIS is basic Orbx!

What you have to understand is that Prepar3d V4 is less than 1 month old. It's a new born baby.

At the time of those shots, what you see is BASIC scenery.

Memory usage has been greatly improved. People who like flying the high demand aircraft like the PMDG planes, or long cross country flights, can do it with the settings set higher and not crash to the desktop.

People, like me, who want all of the environment sliders shoved far to the right can now do so.

And in spite of the "Minimum" LM requirements, many people with a little less than that are reporting that they are flying smoothly although with lower FPS.

So this is just the beginning. :D

A very interesting commentary with screenshots.

Not sure what to do at this stage with this electronic gizmo...it is NEW....and running FSX OK.

This electronic gizmo is only used for FSX and I have aviation data stored on it as well.

I still have not got P3D yet.

Waiting to see what my son is building first I guess.

With real aircraft available in many types the table top game is not as attractive as if it was Minus 30 C and below IFR.
Although my aviating is cut almost in half during the late Fall/Autumn and Winter months I still manage to get some wheel/ski flying in, however I spend more time during that period on the FSX game than I would during the Spring, Summer and early Fall/Autumn months.

It seems to this Old Retired Rocking Chair Flying Geezer the Longer I wait...the better chance of someone designing and selling the perfect Table Top Flight Simulator Game.
Something new seems to be popping up on the market every couple of months.

Again thanks for the commentary...much appreciated...

It was interesting when I was in the Olympic mountains and took a ride in a C172.

I found myself looking at the mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes just as if I were in front of my three monitors.

Seriously, that's the way I saw it. Three monitors give you a feeling that the scenery is all around you.

Flying in a real plane is more fun, and I would rather hop in a real plane every day, but that's not going to happen.

So, for me, the only option is what I have - the flight sim equipment and multiple monitors.

A non sequitur
My car runs well, no problems. But it is 13 years old, and a new one would be nice.

But for less than two (maybe three :D ) monthly payments I can have a sim that gives me a great deal more pleasure. And as I said, the car runs fine.

The point?
Even if you only use your flight sim during the winter, it may be worth spending the money needed to get the most out of it.

You don't need to look at Prepar3d V4 as just another step up a never ending chain. THIS version may give you enough realism to satisfy you.

When I "fly" through the mountains and a valley or meadow opens up in this new Prepar3d, I stop and just look around.

Image

The greater detail gives it a better feeling of perspective. Simply put, it turns a picture into a vista.

Image

I may not have flown a light aircraft except for that one time, but I've walked many a mile up and down mountains when I was younger. Enough to appreciate a grand view when I see one.

Image

With this sim, and three monitors for the scenery, you can get a much better feeling of flight than you can looking through one monitor.

Thanks OldAirmail again for the commentary and screenshots.

It will certainly give me something to think about while sitting in Church this morning.
The Old Girl will wonder what I am up too when she sees the smile on my face.... :naughty:

Right now I am using just two monitors...one is used for Plan-G v3.1.4 which you were good enough too help me with.

A little OFF Topic maybe but trying to setup a Circuit in FSX and Plan-G to continue to fly VFR and IFR Approaches.

Again thanks for the commentary... <<q
