Saitek Pro Flight Instrument Panel

Prepar3D - Lockheed Martin has taken the FSX platform into a new level aimed at the professional.

Saitek Pro Flight Instrument Panel

After upgrading to Prepar3d V2.1.9 I had to "re-install" the Saitek Flight Instrument Panel.

This is one that I "dressed up" a bit by making the little knobs more distinctive.

While I'd love to have a few more, I'm not about to pay for more than the one.

But there are times when they come in very handy.

If you have one or more, you might be reluctant to switch to Prepar3d V2.x because it doesn't support the little instrument gauge.

On the other hand, if you're willing to get your hands dirty doing a simple mod...

What you're going to have to do to use the FIP is to add a few lines into a Prepar3d XML file.

This isn't going to be programing. What I'll show you is as simple as a little typing, or cut & paste.

Step 1

Go to this file on your C drive;
Users - yourname - AppDatata - Roaming - Lockheed MArtin - Prepar3D v2

The file that you need to modify is exe.xml

If this sounds too complicated STOP. You can bring your computer to me, or someone who knows what he's doing to have this done.

Not scared yet? Good for you. No one ever had fun without breaking a few things.

Step 2

Make a copy or two and put them in two safe places.

Step 3

Right click on exe.xlml and choose Edit. Most people will probably have to choose "Open with...", and pick Notepad.

Open notepad to fill the window and turn on "Word Wrap" underneath the "Format" in the menu if you need to.

You'll probably see something like this;

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?><SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0"> <Descr>Launch</Descr> <Filename>exe.xml</Filename> <Disabled>False</Disabled> <Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad> <Launch.Addon> </Launch.Addon>
</SimBase.Document>

I'm going to break that up and simplify it a bit.

At this point it's VERY easy to make a mistake and alter/delete something, so be careful.

Here goes.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="Windows-1252"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="Launch" version="1,0">

<Descr>Launch</Descr>
<Filename>exe.xml</Filename>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Launch.ManualLoad>False</Launch.ManualLoad>

<Launch.Addon>
</Launch.Addon>

</SimBase.Document>

What you want to do I to place this;
<Launch.Addon>
<Name>Saitek DirectOutput RadioStack</Name>
<Disabled>False</Disabled>
<Path>C:\Program Files (x86)\Saitek\DirectOutput\SaiFlightSimX.exe</Path>
<CommandLine>-run</CommandLine>
</Launch.Addon>

ABOVE "</SimBase.Document>" WITHOUT CUTTING/DELETING/ALTERING ANYTHING ELSE!

When saved and the file exe.xml is double clicked, you'll see something like this;

What you will have added is this;

I've tried to make it step by step. The added part is EXACTLY what is in the FSX version of exe.xml. No more, no less.

BUT remember - I used to juggle knives. For fun.

So be careful & make backups. You don't want to get hurt.

Thanks, elbo.

V2.1.9 has finally started to live up to the hype.

And day by day I'm making P3d behave the way that I want.

I downloaded the latest version of OpusFSX.

This time when I added it to the Prepar3d exe.xml file, it seems to work without crashing P3d.

One more step.

If you're not familiar with OpusFSX, they've added the control of the ButtKicker into the program.

What does the ButtKicker have to do with the weather? I don't have the slightest clue.

Frankly though, it's almost made the ButtKicker into a must have along with rudder peddles.

Without the ButtKicker control, I'd find it hard to justify buying a ButtKicker.
