If you want to fly them yourself, and not just as AI, you have to edit the campaign XML file.

Does the Tech Tree only show up when you've flown at least one mission in a campaign?
I started a campaign, selected pilot, bomber career etc, then saved the campaign, went to the campaign xml file, but could not find a Tech Tree at the bottom.

Are you sure you're looking in the campaigns folder?  You should be able to view and edit the tech tree as soon as the campign is on your computer.

You cannot add our or anyone else's planes to a campaign you have already started.

Hi wwatkins.

This is just a matter of incorrect descriptions, or descriptions lacking in detail which may lead to confusion.

In CFS3, there is a campaign.xml. But this is not the file you mean when you say "you have to edit the campaign xml file".

The correct xml is called "fortress europa.xml" and is in the "campaigns" folder.

This needs to be explicit, or people will just end up looking in the wrong place, like I did.

When I did look in the right place, I did find the Tech tree and replaced the B_26C with the B17G_MollyII.
When I saved and then began a new US campaign, I was surprised to find that the first aircraft available to me was a B_26C which I had deleted, but there was no sign of a B17G_MollyII which I had inserted.

Spooky right?

Sorry about that.  I guess that is a bit misleading.
As for the B26 showing up instead of the B17, I don't think the B17G should  be availabe to fly at thebeginning of the Fortress Europa campaign.  Look at the 'squadron' tab in the camnpaign, and see if it's available there.  Assuming you put the entered service date in the B17's tech tree entry that is listed in its XDP file, there woudn't be anything for you to fly at the start of the campaign, so my guess would be that it just defaults to the B26.

Wait a minute, are you saying that there's an entry in the B-17 xdp file that resides in the aircraft folder which gives the service date entry?

Just looking now....

Found this:
"Entered Service 07/07/43"

So if I changed this date to the start date of the B-26C, and then did all the other stuff, then I could probably get the B-17 as the start aircraft. right?
This is definitely worth checking.

To get a plane in a campaign it needs to have an in service date at or before the current campaing date.
