The 9600 could have more memory if the manufacturer simply puts more memory on the board. The original ATi 9600 only comes in 128, but when companies get their hands on it such as Powercolour, Asus, and Sapphire, they can put more memory on it. Remember though that just because there is more memory doesn't mean its better. The Radeon 9800 Pro 128 and 256mb versions show virtually no difference at all except in the rare case where the 256 will outperform the 128. Not worth another 100$
To get back on topic though, I am running a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb. Game looks great, but after a while of playing, everything except the sky and ground turns white; planes, buildings, cockpit, menus... everything.
