Campaign questions

I have a couple of questions about campaign games. Ive not been able to find an answer in the manuals or in the help, maybe somebody can help me.
1) Its worth to destroy other objectives in addition to the mission goal? P.e: in a fighter sweep mission you shot down all target fighters but you have some ammo left and decide to search and destroy some nearby ground target before returning home. Have it any impact in the campaign?... or does the engine only take into account the success or not success in mission objectives when calculating the development of the war?
2)The stars at the left of the mission lists in the sector in the map mode. Each mission has from 1 to 3 stars... i suppose its the importance of the mission and it gives an idea of the impact it will have in the strategic development of the campaign, isn
