The way I moved the front line was to destroy the enemies ability to wage war. Destroy shipping, factories, supply lines, etc. You could shoot down the entire Luftwaffe or Royal Air Force and it seems they will still push the lines forward (Although this seems a bit unrealistic at times). Ground attack missions may not be glorious and exciting, but it has to get done.
