Rear Gunners

The latest Air Battle game from Microsoft! Running on an entirely new platform, CFS3 is raising it's fair share of problems & opinions - Good & Bad!

Rear Gunners

Postby x_jasper » Fri Jun 02, 2006 7:23 am

Anyone know why some Rear Gunners either shoot like they're blind, or even don't shoot at all ? maybe some of em are dead ? ???

Bear if you pick this one up, the 110 gunner does shoot but he has a lousey aim. Conversely the SBD rear gunner won't shoot at anything, just sits there. I tried fresh download of SBD three times and checked everything.

Help from anyone on this appreciated.

Interesting!
The 110 gunners have commonly been bugged to be overly deadly.
Which 110's exactly are you talking about, the older G-2 line or the G-4 nightfighter betas?
I ask because the nightfighters have a reduced rate limit (toned-down rotation speed) for their Mg81 to adress their over-accuracy.

The "fire but don't hit anything" issue can be model-related, chance is that I have miss-aligned the gunstation pivots.
FYI there's a chance, if you don't follow the SDK guidelines on pivot orientation by the numbers, to make a gun that works ok for the player but the AI can't cope with it, so it's not an obvious bug to catch.
Whatever, the new Bf110's that come with MAW will not have that issue, and I think all other MAW planes should work ok, too (keep fingers crossed that no crate slips through version control

Thanks Mathias

The aircraft in question are avhistory's. They are the Bf110c, Bf110g2, and their SBD. Although since discovering this I am now aware of the same defficiencies with stock too. Plus the Ground Crew 110.

That said, it's a shame the SBD has a bad rear gunner as I particularly like that aircraft. I understand a compromise fix may be in the XDP, but as you say you would lose the aircraft in multiplay.

In my opinion the CFS3 file check is a pain in the ***, does MAW retain the checker from within the CFS3 core ? I hope not. :'(

But I guess no matter how much work goes into a model there is always going to be some niggling bug somewhere.

I am looking forward to the Hs123 download from GroundCrew(hint), at least that'll give me something to tinker with.

You confirmed my suspicions on the rear gun mounts, and thanks. Much appreciated.

I'm afraid the file checker is hardcoded to the CFS3.exe, not much we can do about it other than trying to provide you with an addon as accurate and complete as possible.  ::)

I am not sure what is expected of the defensive gunners but it should not be much.

Thing is defensive guns were only really good at forcing the interceptors to fire from a distance & not shooting them down.

Example Schweinfurt-Regensburg Mission

376 bombers of sixteen bomb groups flew against German heavy industry well beyond the range of escorting fighters.

Before they had to turn back Spitfire pilots claimed 14 German fighters shot down and P-47 pilots claimed 16. Gunners on the bombers claimed 288 fighters shot down, but Luftwaffe records showed only 27 lost to B-17 defensive fire.

Average B-17 ammo load was 5000 rounds or 1,880,000 rounds of ammo for the entire formation.

Hmm, makes you stop and think what a bum of a job it must have been in a gun turret:(

The 'jury is still out' though with me and CFS3, but for the time being at least I'll be eager to install MAW when it is released. I wonder where on GC site is that Hs123 ? I can't find it.  :'( I had one ages ago in CFS2 and loved it.

Actually speaking of gunnery, why do AA batteries keep firing at me when I am supposed to be allied to them ? is this another bug or am I missing something here ?

Thanks for the help.

IIRC in QC they hate everybody & are equal opportunity shooters.

The Hs-123's flight model is being adjusted as we just got some additional info on its lower wing flaps.
