Venturing into online flying - HELP PLZ

I have started my foray into online flying - VATSIM and i have joined virtual UPS - now the problems begin.
VATSIM is configured and i can connect and all seems fine there.
The problems are with the virtual (VA) UPS.
I assume that others on here have flown with virtual airlines before. There is a lack of tutorials to help.
The problem is with the ACARS(recording) system-it's like vPilot - it is like nothing i have ever used and am floundering.
If anyone has previous experience with these type of programs, please help
