The Famous "Route 66"... ...!

After travelling Route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago, and back, many times in my classic Peterbilt Tractor-Truck, courtesy of; "18 Wheels of Steel across America", and "18Wheels of Steel Pedal to the Metal", I'm now going to "Fly" the same route, following the same roads, using my USA Maps, and Google Road Maps, on my Desk-top, and following my Flight Plan on FS Navigator.

For overall versatility, I will be using my trusty Default Beech Baron 58, which I have fitted with the Turbochargers from the Baron TC model, for extra speed and power.

I will select my own VFR Weather for the flights, (I never fly in bad weather!), and Fuel consumption will be calculated between stops.

It will be fun to drop off now and again and learn, (Google), more information about the various Regions on my way, (as I always do!)..... ...!

I will be using the Sim V Multiplayer Server and Flight Planner, so I may come across some of my Sim V Chums en-route?.. ...!

Santa Monica CA: Highway 210 > 15.
Flagstaff AZ: Highway 15 > 40.
Albuquerque NM: Highway 40.
Santa Fe NM: Highway 25 > 40.
Amarillo TX: Highway 40.
Oklahoma City OK: Highway 44.
Tulsa TX: Highway 44.
Kansas KS: Highway 44.
St Louis. MO: Highway 44.
Springfield IL: Highway 55.
Chicago IL: Highway 55.

These roads roughly follow the Original Route 66 which has been by-passed or discontinued in places.

Flying Route 66 in the sim has been something I've wanted to do for some time now...

I have got the "Google" road map displayed full size on my desktop...
(I press the "Windows Key" to toggle between my desktop map and FS 2004 whilst flying).

I use FS Navigator to display the Airfields en-route, record my daily Flight Plan, and obtain my Radio Beacon frequencies for navigation.

The same route planning can be done with the FS 2004 GPS Map.....!

Its interesting to check the accuracy of the FS 2004 road system....its pretty accurate...so far!......!

I have to detour slightly to locate a nearby Airfield for re-fuelling, and then continue to follow the road again.

The complete journey is going to take a while, using an hour or so of flight each day, but its a good exercise to learn all about each State and Town that I pass through...(I love History and Geography/Geology!).. ...!

Route 66 was/is very popular with Motorcyclists and I have always wished I could have done it...
...but its too late now... ...
...Imaginary Flight-simming is the best I can come up with now!... ...!

...its difficult to imagine anyone wanting to live in Arizona!... :o...!

Mostly desert, apart from the very occasional "Green" spot!

En route, passed a very interesting place; "Ford Motor Company Arizona Proving Ground". It is represented exactly in FS 2004...>>>

I have had the pleasure of actually driving that route......a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

The Needles area in the summer is one hotter'n hell place.  I remember the car overheating...and the coolant and radiator was basically FINE.  Had to wait until later in the day to finish the cross desert drive.

I pop into Multiplayer now and again, (in between Shopping, Cooking, Hoovering and Dusting, etc..etc...), Study the Map, File a Flight Plan, and take off from Airfields in my Route 66, using

Completed the flight from Flagstaff (KFLG) to Albuquerque (KABQ) via the awful Arizona Desert!

Mile after mile of nothing but red sand!

Then hopped over to the fantastically named "Santa Rosa Route 66" Airfield (Q58) in New Mexico, closely following the Route 66 Highway, leaving the amazing mountain ranges surrounding Albuquerque behind!

Next hop will be from Santa Rosa

I'm beginning to see why I spend most all of my time flying around Sunny California... ....

...just completed the Hop from Amarillo (KAMA), to Oklahoma City (KOKC) across Western Texas...

...finally entering the U.S. Mid-West...flat as a Pancake in every direction, dotted with the occasional small Town!.... ...!

Certainly a disappointment after touring the exciting landscape of the Pacific West!

Oh well....ploughing on...and Route 66 is still below me, busy with traffic, and amazingly easy to follow... ...!
