FSX multiplayer without using Gamespy?

Postby machineman9 » Sat Aug 09, 2008 6:56 am

I am sure 99% of you with FSX multiplayer are sick and tired of Gamespy. Personally I have only ever been able to get up-time twice (since Christmas) for long enough to be able to connect to a game and fly.

My friend recently got FSX and we want to fly together. We managed to get online, but he didn't forward his ports and upon creation of a host it always lost connection or signed me out.

Are there any other ways to use online multiplayer outside of Gamespy? There is direct IP isn't there? Isn't that just for LAN?

Any thoughts? If worst comes to worst a FS9 downgrade for the multiplayer might just have to happen.

Cheers

Check out FSHostClient, available for free from the link below.  It allows you to connect to FSHost servers such as FlyFS or SimV.  The main drawback is that if you get within about 0.3nm of another player, they will start to jump around a lot, making close formation pretty hard.

...and don't forget, on Multiplayer, lock your Frame Rate to 20 FPS to limit, or stop the "jumping about" effect!...

...its part of the Multiplayer Rules!....;)...!

(If you use High Speed Broadband, and locked Frame Rate, you shouldn't have any problems).

Paul, yeh I told my friend to do that before we even tried a connection on FSX.

So does FSHost just work through the 'direct IP' method?

My friend will need FSHostSpy won't he?

..it is handy to have. That way your can scour the Net for all the IP addresses for Multiplayer.....stick a shortcut on the Desktop...;)...!

I forget how FSX Multiplayer works now, but if its anything like FS 2004 you just type the address in the box and do a "search"...then if successful, "join"... :)...!

Or you could select the address and let him know what it is before the flight...

Paul....FS 2004 is so easy to connect to Multiplayer with any IP Address*... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]...!

* probably why so many Folks are still enjoying FS 2002/FS 2004 Multiplayer Flights with no connection problems...;)...!

That last point is so true. Stick the in the IP, whack GO and you are there... None of this blasted bad connection rubbish. I imagine that is why they are called 'the good old days'

Just need to get his ports succesfully forwarded (and mine, for the server) and then we can try from there.
