I hope this is the place to go with this Q.

I finaly bought the bullet and up-graded to DSL, FS COF is soon to follow.

But I'd like to try flying on line.  Can some one direct me to where I can read about what I need as far as voice and such? But more emportantly, where can I go to learn how and what to say to a sim ATC? Where can I go to learn how to properly approach an airport...?

If you head over to www.vatsim.net , it'll tell you what to get in terms of software. Flying online is fantastic amounts of fun, and well worth a try at least once.

The best place to learn how to interact with the ATC and fly approaches is to fly offline, with MS's ATC. You soon get a feel of what to say where and when. Basically it's a case of reading back whatever they say and understanding it. Flying offline shows you exactly what the ATC will say and how they'll say it, and it'll also show you what to say in return.

As for approaches, the ATC will direct you almost right to the airport, and then it's up to you. But the same applies here - fly offline with the computer ATC and you'll figure out what to do. Once you can read back exactly what your pilot is saying at exactly the same time, then you know roughly what to do! And there's no angry people on the other end if you mess up.

You probably wasted the money getting DSL just for flying online. I was afraid that a dialup wouldn't work too until I tried it. FS 2004 flies great online and you don't need a lot of connection speed. Of course you'll love that DSL for downloading add ons.  ;D

Vatsim is a great place to fly online. I prefer Bushnet myself since it suits my flying style. It's a little less formal since it's targeted more to the smaller planes flying in unpopulated areas. Which ever you like best go ahead and try some online flying. It adds a lot to the game.

I've been quite active with BFU since last spring, but keep forgetting to connect to the server when I fly.

I haven't been to the forums yet. I usually just use MattNW. My plane is usually N714MW. I've only flown four or five times so far since I found that FS flies well online but I'll likely do more in the future. Hope I see you there.
