Can't be heard by others online.

Postby rileinc1 » Tue Feb 26, 2008 9:04 pm

Hello, I've been playing MS FS (9 & 10) for three years now and yesterday I decided to give online multiplayer a try (through GameSpy).
I have no problem connecting and joining a host. I can hear voices coming from others but they can't hear me when I hold down Cap or Shift+Cap (I have microphone enabled in FSX). My microphone works perfectly fine on Teamspeak, Ventrilo, and Skype. FSX doesn't seem to be able to find the voice input device.

OS: Vista Ultimate 32-bit (with the latest updates)
Sound driver: Realtek High Definition Driver v.6.0.1.5497 (latest as of Feb 15, 2008)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA P35C-DS3R (with onboard sound)
[Sound] section of fsx.cfg
AmbientUIMusicVolume=-6.000000
PrimaryDevice={DEF00000-9C6D-47ED-AAF1-4DDA8F2B5C03}
VoiceDevice={DEF00002-9C6D-47ED-AAF1-4DDA8F2B5C03}

SOUND=1
SOUND_QUALITY=2
SOUND_LOD=0
UISound=1
AmbientUI=0
SOUND_FADER1=0.400000
SOUND_FADER2=0.600000
SOUND_FADER3=0.550000
SOUND_FADER4=0.600000
AmbientUIMusic=FSX01

Can anyone help me out? More information will be provided if they're needed. Thanks in advance.

Talk louder?
Tried that. Mic volume & mic boost are all to the max. Screaming into the mic doesn't work either.

Sorry, images removed. Can I post links?

Rile,

When you are using the multi-player for FSX, are you using the GameSpy servers?

Also, if you use Skype, sometimes Skype will mess up your microphone settings when you switch to other programs.  To check for this:

1) Open Skype.  Select Tools, Options, Audio Settings: Make sure the "Let Skype adjust my audio settings" is unchecked!  If it is checked, Skype has a tendency to turn your mic down when you move to other applications.

2) After clicking off Skype's automatic sound control, open your volume control menu for your system, preferably the Windows default controls, but whatever controls your system sound should be fine.  From here, readjust your mic sensitivity and use the mic boost if necessary.

On three systems I have had to tinker with, this has been the issue (Skype), and the above steps fized the problem.

Let me know if you are still having problems after this or if my instructions were unclear.  Hope you are able to get things sorted out!

Best of luck,
Darrin

Hi Darrin, thanks for taking the time to reply.

Yes, I connect using the default GameSpy login in FSX.

Your instructions are crystal clear, however I've already eliminated the possibility of low volume. Please have a look at the screenshots:
Skype sound settings: http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/04-SkypeAudio.jpg
FSX Sound settings: http://www.simviation.com/yabbuploads/01-FSXSound.jpg

Notice the difference? Skype detects my Mic and Speakers as separate sources whereas FSX only lists Speakers for both output (Sounds) and input (Voice). I then took a look at my fsx.cfg (see post #1) and found out that their addresses are the same; I believe they're not suppose to be the same.

How about your overall system settings (the ones accessed through either the system tray sound icon or your control panel)?  Would it be a possibility to see a screenshot of those, too?

Thanks.

Still pondering the problem,
Darrin

EDIT:
This weekend as I have some time I will try and take some screenshots and write out some further ideas/suggestions.  Sorry for the long wait for answers!

Hi Darrin. Thank you for your help. The problem seemed to have been... er non-existent from the first place. I logged in yesterday and was able to be heard loud and clear by other players. I did do a small change to my sound settings but I don't think it was the problem. Here's what I did:
Control Panel -> Sound -> Recording tab -> right click on Microphone then Properties -> Advanced tab -> uncheck "Allow application to take exclusive control of this device"

Realtek sound manager screenshot as requested:

Once again, thanks for your help, you've been awesome :D

Glad you were able to get things sorted out.  And the first screenshot was exactly what I was aiming for!  Looks like you beat me to the punch and figured it out.  I know sometimes my mic gets all tweaked up if I let the different applications control it instead of controlling it through the main, overall settings for the computer.  Skype has been a  bit of a trouble in the past for some reason (turning the mic volume down after exiting Skype).

Anyway, glad you were able to sort it all out.  Happy flying!
