Sean,

Getting down to more basics........

Which sim are you using?  FS2004.... FSX?

If you are using FSX, I THINK to split out the online comms/ATC onto phones and mic, you HAVE to use a set of USB phones, not the ones that plug directly into your sound card.  And there is some setup required in FSX to get that usb setup active.  I only have heard that from reading.... I don't use FSX.

If you are using fs2004 (or fs2002), there is no direct way to talk online like that in FSX.  Those who are using voice online in this case are using an external program to accomplish this.  The usual one is Teamspeak...... which is freeware.  So first you have to install Teamspeak, then configure it on your machine.  Then you assign a PTT key (default is F12).  When online you input the IP of the Teamspeak server you are using into the "connect" dialog screen, hit connect, (for the SimV server it is the same as the flight server's IP).... and away you go.

best,

Thanks for your reply guys.

Yes I am using FSX and was tempted by the supposed 'ease of use' of FSX Multiplay compared with FS9.

The mic works fine when I use the speech recognition tests that are part of Win XP, just not in FSX. It's definitely not muted.

Interesting point about the USB headset. Might have to get one and try that.

Thanks.
