Postby mikegmbn » Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:10 pm

today in school while on my way to use the camode i came up with an idea!!! we should have live atc's for the major airports in the US and UK !!!!! we can set up separate room things in teamspeak on our own server and contact the atc's !!!! am i the only 1 who thinks this is a brilliant idea???

Well, good idea Mike.
But it has been done before and in quite a big way.
There are several Servers on the internet the best (in my opinion) being Vatsim and a close second IVAO. They often get in excess of 1000 pilots and ATC online at once covering the whole world. Vatsim is probably best if you are US or UK. IVAO is busier in Europe, in particular Eastern Europe. They are both very good and realistic. Al free
There are also other public servers that you can find on with FSSpy some that use ATC on TS. If you have FSHost you can of course set your own up.

Only thing I don't like about VATSIM is that they do accept "free emails"...My ISP does not issue an email...Screw them... >:(

I think you mean to say 'they do NOT accept free emails'
If you join Vatsim you join using your real full name, nobody flies or controls under an alias.
Likewise only 'Proper' email addresses are used. This helps stop abuse of the system. Everybody is therefore accountable for their behaviour and anybody acting the fool can be banned. Thankfully bad behaviour and bans are rare, a testament to the system.
Don't blame Vatsim because you have a crappy ISP that don't issue an email, there are lots of organisations (nothing to do with FS) that do not accept such email addresses.
Vatsim take there Flight Simming seriously, there are plenty of servers available for those that don't.

Well Mike, sometimes I've searved as ATC for an airport using TS (teamspeak) - although fairly basic as I don't have any RADAR things for FS (e.g. FsNav or something) which would make it a more professional style of ATC. I'd say your best bet is VATSIM, i know a lot of Simmers on these forums use VATSIM but I've never done so myself. :)

This is true Mike, but Squawkbox actually simplifies the whole process of connection and speach client (AVC)being in one package.
But does it really matter? As long as its good
IVAO use teamspeak as well as there connection software and (IMO) its not as good.

Woa Woa Woa,  SLOW DOWN!!!  You cant just hop into VATSIM, just like you cant hop into a plane and fly real life.

Start here: http://vatsim.net/prc On the left where it says required reading.  It should take about a week before your ready for a flight. Its not the run of the mill FS ATC. This is as close to the real thing you can get without needing a pilots licence  ;D ;)

Mike
As BAW0343 says, you do need to do some groundwork first.
Vatsim is run in such a manner, that it is about as realistic as can be got at the moment online. Just like in real life you would not expect to be able just to jump in a aircraft, fly off and expect to be welcomed in the sky by pilots and atc, the same applies in Vatsim. Otherwise it would just be a mess and the experience would e ruined for those that enjoy Vatsim for what it is.
If its not your idea of fun to do it as in real world, then the best thing you can do is choose more gamey FS servers.
That said, if it is what you are looking for then you will need to go to the url posted by BAW above and 'STUDY' the info and manuals in The Pilot Resource centre. You will need to learn an idea of atc phraseology, VFR procedures (if your going to fly VFR).
If you fly IFR then you are going to need to know how to Flightplan Realworld style. How to choose and fly the correct SID and STAR. You need to know about altitude and Flightlevels and which you should use for your chosen flightplan.
Also how to fly airways.
3rd party software is not essential but can be helpful in the above and programs like FSNavigator or FSComander can make flying more enjoyable and simpler.
So, as you can see there is a lot of work to do before you should connect, but it will make it worth your while in the long run.
You will find the ATC a lot more help if yu have put some effort into learning.

One thing that confuses me though Mike is just a couple of posts ago, you said you could not get in on a free email, so screw em. Now you have registered and want to know how to connect? Perhaps a less 'serious' server would be more appropriate for you at this time.
