US TOUR FLIGHT # 18

Postby Jared » Sat Oct 22, 2005 10:54 am

Evening all, are we ready for another fun session of flying?

On Saturday October 22nd at 9pm eastern standard time we will fly between KPEO (PENN YAN, NEW YORK, USA) and KMPV (BARRE/MONTPELIER, VERMONT, USA)

Distance along great circle: 249.8 statute miles, 217.1 nautical miles, 402.0 kilometers
Initial true great circle heading: 62.8 degrees (east-northeast)

Because it is more than 200 NM I would recommend the use of a larger turboprop such as the default king-air,  the piper cheyenne, or a similar aircraft.

As always if you are flying a addon aircraft I would suggest starting the flight in the default king-air so that we see you as a  similar type of aircraft.

For general questions please refer to the general question thread:

Please remember to let us know if you will be coming and give us a heads up your skype name so we can give you a call when it comes time to go flying..

Hope to see you there,

Destination Vital Statistics

Edward F. Knapp State Airport

KMPV is not a towered airport, it uses Boston Center on 135.7  / 282.2, and UNICOM is on 122.8.  Of course, we'll use frequency SKYPE  ;).

Lights dusk to dawn via CTAF and revolving white/green beacon.

Bring your credit card........ Avgas is $4.40 a gallon!  :o

The airport elevation is 1165 feet.

Runways are 17/35 (5002 feet....asphalt ...fair condition) and 05/23 (4022 feet ......asphalt...good condition).

Rwy 17 is the "main" runway with 4-light PAPI on left (3 degrees) and 4-light MALSR approach lights.  Left pattern.  Nothing on the others.

05/23 has no snow removal....... and if running real weather....... we might get some snow in the north country tonight  :D.

The Burlington IAF vor (117.5 BTV) is located on the typical Rwy 17 ILS approach pattern so it might make a good navigation entry.  Use the 092 from to the REGGI intersection then rt turn 168.  You are about 18 nm out at the turn, and should be at about 5200 feet ASL.

There is the Montperlier vor (110.8   MPV) roughly in line with the 17 approach pattern flying at 168 degrees.  Threshold is at about 1.1 nm DME.

Watch the mountains....... 4088 feet within 10 NM of the airport.  Between the outer and middle marker there is a 2000 foot +/- mountain just left of the runway centerline.

ILS localizer is on 108.7 (I-MPV).

A good alternate is KBTV, Burlington International, 30 nm to the NW.

After we arrive I think I'll rent a car and head up to Lake Champlain for a few days.

best,

........john

I just checked the realworld weather at KPEO at about 7:00 PM Eastern ........ overcast and light rain............. wind 216 @13.............. viz at 1 mile.  If you get up over it... threre is still a good view thru haze and broken clouds in daylight conditions.

So it's possible to use RW weather and not stare at a solid cloud cover undercast  ;).

I plotted out the following route for flight planning.......

KPEO.WEIGH.NIDUQ.REGGI.KMPV

in the default FS2004 flight planner.  It lines you up for the runway 17 ILS.  You cross just about directly over the VKN (268.0) NDB between the REGGI intersection and the airport, so that is another way to line up............. fly to "on top" the VKN and then turn rt to 168.

Flight time using that plan in the default Baron is 1:16, needing about 45 gallons of fuel for the 237.5 nm.

See you all tonight.

best,

Starting to think about setting up the simpit for tonight's flight.

I am currently logged onto the ts. NetFrag.org Teamspeak server and on the "flightdeck" channel.  I will be there all during the US Tour flight, I think, if anyone lese is on there too..... but I also will have Skype online.  If no one else is on the Teamspeak setup... I'll kill it.

I only have one mike....... so I will have to switch the mike jack back and forth between the two separate inputs if there are folks on both systems.  I will only be able to talk on one at a time  ;).  The sound will come through two different outputs already though.

If I had two mikes......... it would be like having comm 1 and comm 2 radios  ;).  I'll have to work on the problem...... with a mike switch (TX1 / TX2) maybe.

best,
