Western Gopher Air Service

Postby Staiduk » Tue Aug 10, 2004 7:39 am

OK; now before this gets moved; this is not about a new VA!

Kinda hard to describe what it is about though. ;)

OK; let me explain: I got real bored last night and thought to myself how annoying it is to have to come up with your own missions to fly - you know; set weather, destination, loads, etc.
I thought it'd be interesting to come up with my own flights therefore and put them up for people to try; a different one each day, or near enough.
Of course; continuity makes things a bit more realistic and fun; so I came up with a storyline for a "Red Greene gets his pilot's lisence" sort of company; called it "Western Gopher Air Services" and built a quick Geocities website.
Soooooooo......
If'n you want to try some fun, challenging missions (and critique my pitiful website-building skills); please go and try it out - I think you'll have fun! I've no idea how to get this thing to appear on a search engine; so this is just for the friends at this forum at the moment. :)
It's here: Western Gopher Air Services
Enjoy! (I hope)

Just checked out the site. Looks pretty nice. You know though that in that area you'll be competing with BFU don't you. That's OK I guess. We often have passengers who keep asking for the "Economy Package". We'll send those your way.

Thanks a lot, Matt!
I was trying to figure out how to get a kneeboard-operable briefing to work; thanks for the help on that one!
(Though I ought to point out the FAA doesn't have jurisdiction in British Columbia - the agency is NavCanada. ;D )

The only problem I have with it is that if I start the flight from the flights app. icon; the briefing shows up fine, but if I start FS9 first; then select the flight from 'Flights'; the briefing doesn't display.  :( Lol - I'll figure it out. ;)

Didn't know about Bush Flying Unlimited before you mentioned it - looks like a great group!

As for a livery I'd like to make one; but that's just a bit down the road yet - I'm pretty miserable at making new textures so that'll be a learning experience. :)

Cheers!

Oops forgot this was in Canada. I sent you an email with the .html file attached. I tried it and it works OK for me. Hopefully it will for you.

I've been flying for BFU for about a year now. It's a little more serious than WGA but has it's fun jobs now and then too. Check out the last one I flew "King Of The Wild". That was a long one but fun to write up. Another good one is the series about "Sister Heather". It's buried back some weeks but a search should bring it up. I think there's also a copy on the BFU PIREP Hall Of Fame.

If you are looking for some flights of to fly yourself you are welcome to go over and take a flight at BFU. just make sure you post one too. They don't mind a competitor taking a job or two. I have my own charter service "Wolf Charters" although it's not as shoestring as WGA. ;D We fly a Lake Renegade and a Super Otter.

I'll take a look at the textures for the AC500 and see what I can come up with for a livery. It'll be mostly just editing the original textures a little. Kind of like someone painted over the current livery and scratched in the WGA.

Just tried Flight One. You maybe overdid it a little on the weather. I was flying almost blind most of the flight.  ;D How I ever made it to the right airport and got on the ground I'll never know but I managed it somehow. Never did see Quesnel. Visibility it was zero zero at for that portion of the flight. To get the destination airport to let me land I had to file an IFR flight plan. Of course without a Nav Radio flying an ILS approach was an adventure and a half.  :o Jerry Stumf refused a complementary flight back. Said something like, "If I ever decide to fly with WGA again somebody just shoot me." Probably because I had to fly so low to keep the landmarks in sight. Oh, have Jethro check the landing gear. I think I picked up a squirrel in one of the LG bays.  ;D

Somewhere over the outer marker (I think).

Finally have a visual on the runway.

Heh heh - glad you liked it. ;)
And thanks again for the help; I really appreciate it.
Actually; the weather of the flight I put up was toned down a bit from the way I originally designed it; I left the wind and turbulence at light settings and kept the visibility high.
(I dunno about other folks; but I think flying in clear sunshine is real boring. ;D )
Also keep in mind BC gets something like a day and a half of sunshine a year. ;D
Now; I shouldn't give away secrets; but if you liked #1 you'll LOVE #4; ol' Jethro's been trying to fix the VOR's again. I'm pleased to say he got it right finally!

...sort of. ;D
Just in time too....

Haven't been able to fly any more flights. Been working on a livery for WGA. Sent a preview by email. Let me know what you think and if you like it I'll package it so you can put it up for download.
