Trouble is that Fozzer will be busy showing off his shiny new rotary engine, and I'll be going under every bridge on-route.
Its a good idea, if we can agree rules etc, and as a just for fun, no prize etc. Could be good. Hmm.
Should we have categories, such as FS98, FS2k, FS2k2 and then aircraft types? Twins, jets etc.

If we can put together a plan then it could be a gas.

That sounds like a very good idea :D

You would have to have some kind of a map to show the route eh?!

And would you just post the different legs of the race and then have everyone post their times on how fast it took them to get there? or how would you tell who won?

Count me in if its planned though :) :)

Excellent idea!
We have regular, (REAL!), air races over here, popular with the public!
I watch them regularly at my local airfield.
The rules are quite complicated tho'...
Each aircraft is timed over the route before-hand, and then in the race it is run as a handicap, with the slower planes starting first.
Ie: the little Cessna 150's starting well before the P47 Thunderbolts...!
The overall course loop is usually around 100 miles, starting and finishing at the same airfield.
Observers are placed at each turning point, (in the map), and marks are lost, or dis-qualification, for cutting corners.
It would be difficult to know if the rules are being broken during a race in FS 2002..?
I'm ready with my YAK 52 tho'....all 9 cylinders polished and warmed up...LOL...!

Cheers...
Paul.

Here's the rules from Avsim's forum:

[quote]NOTICE TO AIRMEN #1: Make sure you reply to this post when you make your I HAVE THE BATON post. Thank You.

NOTICE TO AIRMEN #2: Please refrain from making flight reservations. Others want to join in on the race, and it is unfair to them because they feel they can not take the baton once the most recent LANDING post has been made because they do not want to take it from someone who has "claimed the next leg." If you get the baton before anyone else, then it's your and you can fly the next leg.

NOTICE TO AIRMEN #3: Pilots who are taking the baton do not have to fly to the airport suggested by another pilot. It is a good idea to fly as far as you can in the two hours, but there are no predesignated destinations. Fly as far as you can in the two hours in the general direction TEAM AVSIM is flying.

NOTICE TO AIRMEN #4: Try to limit the number of screenshots and posts you make regarding one leg of the race to reduce clutter. Edit your posts as necessary.

Here's the world map to track the two teams:

http://www.avsim.com/~mattj/map/

Note that the starting point is Boston and team Flightsim is blue and is flying an easterly course while team Avsim is red and is flying a westerly course
