Converting from FS2004 to CFS2 with MDLC

I've been toyin around with Ivan Hsu's MDLC convertor and mk_mdlc, and following the instructions found here:
http://www.michael-reimer.com/CFS2/CFS2_Tips.html

I understand that to go from 04 to CFS2 you should convert to 02 first then tto CFS2 and the step from 04 to 02 is no problem however no matter what I do the program will not make the step from 02 to CFS2. It tells me to first try converting to 02 which I have already done... starting to get very frustrating

anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Not really since I've not used that method and I'd have to see your files. More often I copy the entire aircraft's folder to the target program. I have done some conversions between FS98, CFS1, CFS2 and FS2k2; the .mdl isn't the only problem when reverting from the later program to the earlier since I most always have to redo the .air file and, often, the sound file. Not only are the FS and CFS formats different but the CFS1 and CFS2 formats are slightly different, so it's rather a fill in the blanks as well as editing.

Thanks, been talking to a guy over at SOH as well and his verdict was that some models just will not convert period. Was trying to get the Zephyr in and have pretty much given up, I did however get the Etendard in though like you said the airfile is kind of screwy so I'll take a look at that tonight/tomorrow.

I've had some success with MDLC. Which Zephyr is this?

You mean this one?

I converted it with MDLC 117 +  mk_mdlc. You can do it all in one go by checking the appropriate options. Give it time to work.

I gave it the AIR file & Aircraft.cfg from the Fox Four Sabre to get it in the air. This would need a bit more work by someone who knows what they're doing.

I'm going to add this here since it must be related to what I've been doing over the last few days since I havnt otherwise touched the sim

Most of my guages have stopped showing in either 2D or 3D panels, I havnt changed anything in the guage folder so dont really see what I could have done.
A complete reinstall dosnt fix it and neither does a reinstall of the affected aircraft (Razbam A-4's being the most noticable)
I'm now out of ideas

How odd. I don't see how converting aircraft with MDLC could have anything to do with this. Those all look like CFS2 default cluster gauges in which case a reinstall should fix it. The first thing I would do is to check the CFS2\Gauges folder for the following gauges.

f4u1a_corsair.gau
extra-300.gau
lear_45.gau
cessna182rg.gau
kingair.gau
concorde.gau
kingair_radio.gau
mooney_bravo.gau
cessna.gau
737-400.gau

If any of these gauges are missing you should be able to retrieve them from the CFS2 CDs. If that still doesn't work try a duplicate install of CFS2.

PS. Does this affect default panels using the above gauges or just 3rd party panels? I'm not sure that all FS9 panels will work in CFS2.

Very odd indeed, just checked and their all there. Lasat night I tried reinstalling CFS2, reinstalled FS2K2 and ported the gauges from there and also reinstalled the Skyhawk pakage, nothing worked. I've spoken to Ron and he's got a guy looking into it, though I really can't think of anything else that should fix it since as you said everything is default.
Also I've had a look through my hangar and it seems to be only the Skyhawks that are affected.
This all started after I set up another aircraft to use the A-4E's panel however it was a C&P job so the A-4E is still as was.

Perhaps the A-4 Panel.cfg is corrupt. I can't check it out as it appears to be payware.

I'm not good at importing FS2004 models but there are certain realities. One is that some models will not convert. Another is that when you do convert them some animations will have to be fixed. This has to do with the program that was used to make the models in the first place. Tango may know a little about this as well.

I tried once or twice a few years back with no good results, and have since founded the ACL (Anti-Conversion League)....if you need an aircraft, build it, get the author to do a CFS2 version or borrow the source file and do it yourself.
