snow scenery for Russian front?

Postby Colin_S » Thu Oct 16, 2008 3:58 am

Does anyone know how to get snowy terrain for a Russian front winter install?
I picked up the cfs2wi zip and tried that, didn't know whether I was following the instructions correctly, but with Grumpy's help got somthing to show up in the scenery library. Set Free Flight to the latitude and longitude of Smolensk, but it was just a darker, dirtier greeny-brown with some large untextured patches.
Am I missing something here?
I have a seperate Russian Winter install so I don't mind altering the normal scenery; I'm retired now so I have plenty of spare time as well.
Anyone know how to do it?

Hi Colin. If you tell me where to download this file I can check it out for you.

It was a long time ago but I seem to recall a winter texture package which we tried out in CFS2 Korea. As I recall it worked a treat. Not sure if it's still available now but I'll see if I can find it.

Hi Hagar
I couldn't find the cfs2wi.zip download anywhere (I thought it was from Simviation) but I found a screenshot which shows winter fields and vegetation at low level and snow only on the mountain tops.
So it appears I got what was intended.
I found the Fox Four campaign zips and the replacement winter textures. I will do a CFS Korea install and look at it. Then I will see if I can replace the main textures in my Russian Winter install. If it works I will report back.
Thanks for your help.

I found the European version of those Korean winter textures here. http://www.combatfs.com/index.php?loc=downloads&page=info&FileUploadName=simonu&FileID=9378

Note that I haven't tried them. I don't know if this includes Russia.

PS. There is also a Hard Winter pack by the same author. http://www.combatfs.com/index.php?loc=downloads&page=info&FileUploadName=simonu&FileID=9468

Got the Korean install set up, with the winter textures. They look exactly right, but at 5 to 10 miles away they change suddenly to Pacific green and it spoils the view entirely-any way round this, such as changing the default no-texture green to grey-white, or altering the distance at which CFS calls up the textures?
The Korean textures don't transfer to the Russian winter install; Smolensk stays resolutely green. Then I tried changing the green textures in scendb\world\texture to white-grey ones- exported the bmp, greyscaled them and resaved them. Didn't change any filenames or anything else, but CFS2 crashed every time
Never managed to get registered with Sim-Outhouse before. If I get through this time I will try these.
Thanks again, had an interesting afternoon so far.
(Found the cfs2wi.zip again at Flight-sim.com)

As I said, it's been a long time. I don't recall a problem with those Korean winter textures but I wouldn't expect them to work in Eastern Europe. I suggest you try to register with SoH & download the European 'Hard Winter' package. If it covers Russia I think it should do the trick.

PS. If that doesn't do it I found an Eastern Front Scenery project by Ajax that you might like to try. Winter texture set HERE

Bingo.
SoH have sorted registration and the 'hard winter' textures work beautifully - I followed simonu's install notes. He suggests turning down the visibility to avoid seeing the green area round the horizon, but this has no effect-whether the vis is set to min - 15 miles - or up to 60, it's still there. Is it to do with land classes or gobal textures? Can you reset from green to white?
I've enjoyably wasted most of the day, my children want the computer so I'll have to leave it now and come back tomorrow.

Glad you got that sorted. I downloaded the Hard Winter textures but didn't install them. According to the author's Readme the green area on the horizon is untextured landclass. I have no idea how to go about fixing that.

Bingo again.
Simonu is right - use the visibility slider in the weather screen, NOT in the advanced settings\image quality screen.
Set it at 15 miles and it feathers out the white - green change of texture line perfectly.
I'm happy now, winter camouflage skins here I come

Thanks to all
