bomber turrets

i downloaded a thing off simviation that lets me use ai planes and fly them. it worked just fine except the turrets on the bomber...when i shoot all the turrets shoot but in different directions that i cant control so theyre basicly useless against fighters...is there some way to let me control the turrets or have the ai shoot them or something?

CFS2 was not designed with player usable turrets.  Only AI piloted aircraft have functional turrets that will track & attack enemy aircraft.

The Phoenix737 every Sims has its strenghth and shortcommings. None is perfect and this one of CFS2 weakness. Had it been able to offer this and a few other features it would have the Sim to beat. Unfortunualy the ability to defend your Bomber from Fighters is not one of them. This Sim does offer a lot of other goodies that no other Sim can offer. Like recreating missions on areas of the World that you are not able to do with other Sims. You have the biggest selection of actual planes sounds of any Sim and the most complete representation of the Pacific Theater in the Sim World. You see its still a pretty good sim.


I recommend for you to read this post and scroll throught it from page 1 to the last one. It will help you improve your experience of flying through this Sim.

There are other Sims that will allow you to use Turrent guns. Pacific Fughter and CFS3 will allow you to fight and defend your Bomber. Pacific Fighter you will to able fly the medium Bomber and defend them but only CFS3 will allow you to fly the Big Bombers. The only short comming is the you can only fly this wondrful Bomber only over Western Europe. But is still a lot of fun.

What I do is fly all three Sims as I desire to fly for that day.

When I make up a bomber mission I make mine a flight with 1 (or 2) bombers right behind me in trail formation. Then the bomber right behind me will (hopefully) hammer away at an attacking fighter. I think it is your only chance.

I suspect in real life a single bomber stood little chance against a talented fighter. Bombers relied on defensive formations or stealth or pure numbers or escort fighters.

If you don't mind messing around you do have an option of sorts. If you use the rear view you can see the tracer of the turrets firing on a fixed line. Very hard to aim these. You can make it easier by doing 2 things;

first, adjust the DP to have the fixed firing line closer to directly astern. Most ai fighters in CFS2 will attack from behind. Also, this will give a 'cone' of fire that you can 'walk around' with a bit of rudder and aileron. You will also be less likely to fly into the ground if the weapons are firing nearly straight backwards. (If you like, offset them to port or starboard so you can turn away from an attacker. Harder to aim and you can only turn one way, but you should be harder to hit)

second, download CFGedit and add a 'panel' to the rear view (or replace the one the a/c shipped with) to give you a gunsight where you have set your guns to fire. I believe there's a japanese dive bomber somewhere that already has this. Sorry, can't remember which one...

You won't be able to track the fighter with the turret, but you'll have a much better chance of fighting back. The P82(?) Defiant and the Arado 234 both have oblique or rear firing weapons, as do many of the German nightfighters, and these models have alternate ways to treat this problem. In fact I find the defiant to be more effective than they were historically because the line of approach seems to put you into a place that the ai doesn't consider to be a threat. Shooting down Me109's is easy because they don't break away until you start hitting them, just keep them off your tail!
