I installed an effects package(explosions, etc.) that caused my game to have a serious memory leak. I would start at 60fps and after about 10 minutes of playing, I would be in the single digits.

Gentelman you can always play around with the settings. Please tune down the sound settings as well.
Another thing you can do is buy a new sound program for your computer.
Maybe your video card is not one of the newer ones or maybe it needs new drivers.
Have you defragmented your computer lately. Perhaps you have place to many planes in your missions.
Remember you do not need to see visual message of whats been said through your radio when flying for the United States Navy.
You can always configurate your CFS2 program to play in a window 98 format if your are playing through a XP window.
Mayby you can set decreasing the visual settings for example from 5 to 3.
Visual resolution can also be manipulated. This is base on a trail and error proccess. Change it and see if you see any difference.
This are just a few Ideas to improve the performance of your PC and thus improve the quality of flying with the CFS2 program.
I hope you have enjoy my tips.

With 60+fps to open I do not think it has to do with his settings. Degradation over time is almost always a memory leak issue.
BTW I run CFS2/3 in WinXP-Pro with no problem.

That sounds like it. I installed an effects package with a bunch of various effects from several authors. I don't remember which package since I'm at work, but it 's the one where you replace whole folders with those in the package.
I think I'll restore all my original effects, then just add one effect at a time rather than that comprehensive install.

If I recall correctly, the effects package that caused my problems was a combo pack that had a bunch of different effects. When I uninstalled the package, my problems went away. I'm 99.9% sure it was a memory leak. I think the effects package was an older Nibbio/Ghostpony compilation. Newer versions or individual effects do not have this problem.
