Being fairly new to online combat flight sims I understand the general consensus is to play at maximum reality which I am trying to do. but dang! it's hard.

Are there any tips or tutorials that anyone would be willing to give (I appreciate this might be open to condescension but I just want to learn how to play a decent game).

Many thanks in advance.

PS what are the programs for finding other online flight sim games.

The training missions and quick combat areas are where you can develop your pilot skills.  I suggest that you will get the most enjoyment from CFS starting at the easy levels until you find yourself yawning from not being challenged and continue to increase the difficulty settings.  It's not easy to just get into any plane real or sim and expect things to just fall into place; have fun  ;)

To Back up Sir Knight I would suggest you play in the game at a realism level that you can handle and take on hordes of random enemies in the quick combat section.  Set the enemy at rookie level and get used to the visual range at which you can seriously start to hurt the enemy.

I would recommend turning off unlimited ammo and setting the ammo effect at normal. Get used to flying and fighting and then gradually increase the flight model realism so that it remains challenging.  In this way your skills will increase and you will start notching up the victories online.

If your squadron allows it I would choose one aircraft and prctice in the sim in that AC exclusively untill you feel more confident.

Good luck

Flying and fighting tips? Okay.... Let's start with if some one gets on your tail and fires at you, well if you have the realism setting on Hard then you should be able to spin around to dodge the shots, depending on your plane. Pull up and bank hard left and you should spin like cr:op, especially if you're in that Tomahawk that comes with the Flying Tigers campaign made by Yoshistsu Nagata aka Yoshi (yeah, but DON'T try doing that shaking manuever at low altitude :o, I've had a close call in that Tomahawk :o. I'll think of some more later....
