Free Flight

I'm not too interested in missions, just like flying around and blowing stuff up in Free Flight or Quick Combat.  Are there any locations with ships or other fields/targets on the same island as the base within Free Flight, or do I have to go elsewhere in CFS2 to do that?

You won't find many ground targets in Free Flight or QC. It really depends which airfield you choose to start from. Most airfields have some sort of buildings you could use for practice. The CFS2 ships can only be used in missions.
