I have a couple planes I want on cfs2 from fs2002. I got one of my favorites to work but I can't get an other aircraft to show on cfs2 it was run through the convertMDL program with no problems but will not show on cfs2. This is the deal with a couple of the planes I am trying to convert. What could be the problem? On the other hand I can not convert a couple of planes all togather I just get an error from convertMDL so I am lost, like out in left field with a basebal bat, lost :-/

Hello Salcidomd,
Download the Fs 2002 to CFS 2 Tutorial

I would just add that ConvertMDL converts the MDL header of pre-CFS2 aircraft models to the new CFS2 format. This allows external payloads to display & function correctly & is its only practical purpose. I've never tried manually editing the MDL of FS2002 aircraft to work in CFS2 but some ready-converted examples I have tried did not work in QC or missions. I find that FS2000 aircraft are the most suitable, except for those designed specifically for CFS2.

Well I have all the programs that the tut.suggests but I noticed it is to convert Gmax models so does it also pertain to non-Gmax models? I have a couple of models that will absoultly not work in cfs2 but work perfectly in fs2002. i dont understand. :(

Yes, it should convert both FSDS and Gmax models. I've converted a few aircraft and so far they've all showed up ;D

Hi Guys,
Stratobat turned me on to that same 'tute' and it works, rather easily, too. I've already done about ten planes (it's addictive) from fs2k2 & fs2k4. Both GMAX & FSDS.
The only thing is , some of the planes come out transparent, you can see thru the skin. That's where the other downloads come in.
Have fun,
Chief

Chief. Thanks to this thread (& Stratobat) I've tried a few myself. This Spitfire originally showed up semi-transparent. I fixed that by converting the main textures from DXT3 to DXT1 Opaque with DXTbmp.

I also tweaked the contact points as mentioned in the tute to fix the gear animation & replaced the prop disk texture. It works fine in Free Flight but haven't tried it in QC or missions yet.

A problem with converted FS 2002/4 aircraft is that they don't always work in QC, I was able to get a Texan to work in QC by using JoneSoft's QC Editor though, so I know that it can be done on some aircraft.
Hagar,
Where can I find that Spit, she looks awesome :)

Hi Guys,
I converted a C-46 to CFS2 and it came out transparent. I liked it and left it that way... LOL When I get tired of seeing what's inside the plane, I'll finish fixing it.
Glad to see I helped someone, do you agree it's addictive? Makes ya wanna do more'n just the one.
Have fun, Chief

Hi Chief. You're quite right, it
IS very addictive & surprisingly easy. Don't make the same mistake as me. I spent a lot of time downloading aircraft from the FS2002/4 sections & converting them before checking out the CFS2 pages. Guess what? Lots of these fine aircraft originally started life in CFS2. Getting the proper CFS2 versions in the first place would have saved me all that time & trouble.
