Poor CFS2 Performance On Windows 10

Maybe somebody who plays CFS2 with Windows 10 can help me on this. When I got a new computer I got Windows 10 as the OS because I knew there were numerous others who played it on Windows 10 so I knew it would work on that OS. But I have been very disapointed because while CFS2 does run, the aircraft skins are terrible and the scenery texture is also very bad. It could be the graphics card as I haven't adjusted it since I don't know how or it could be the CFS2 display settings although I doubt that because FS9 works fine on my system with pretty much the same settings as I had on Windows XP.

If anyone can give me some insight on this problem it would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Have you set the compatibility mode to Windows XP service pack 2?

I can't be much help as I haven't used CFS2 in anger for many years. All my MS sims including FSX run perfectly well on my very ordinary HP Windows 10 laptop with Radeon integrated graphics. I run the older sims like CFS2 on this machine with the graphics settings fully maxed out. CFS2 will run perfectly well from a remote HDD.

Here's a few thoughts which might be some help.
I run all my sims in Full Screen mode which gives me the best quality.
Make sure the Resolution from CFS2 Display Settings is set at the native resolution of your monitor.
The CFS2 scenery is pretty basic. Don't expect it to be the same quality as FS9.

This is how it looks at the above settings on my old laptop. The Corsair is the CFS2 default & the Spitfire is Alphasim freeware.

Thanks for your help Hagar. First of all the native resolution of my monitor is 2560 X 1440. I set everything up as illustrated but could only set the resolution at 2560 X 1440 X 16 as no X32 resolutions appear in my Display Settings. At this resolution, when I select an aircraft, the panel starts to appear momentarily and then the screen goes black. If I select the next lowest resolution the aircraft shows up and the terrain appears to be okay but the aircraft skin is jagged, not smooth like yours show.

Also, I was unable to tick the enable hardware acceleration box as it is greyed out.

you can edit the cfg file to your resolution 2560 X 1440 X 32 and enable hardware acceleration box

I run it on my pc at max settings but I had to edit the cfg file to set my resolution and other settings that were greyed out or unavailable.

Ok I was able to edit the cfg file to resolution 2560 X 1440 X 32 under [DISPLAY] although this does not show up in the program under Advanced Settings, only X16 resolutions show there. I could not figure out under what heading to put enable hardware acceleration and if it should be enable_hardware_acceleration=1. I tried that under [DISPLAY] but the box stayed greyed out. The aircraft skins are now sharp but the aircraft edges are jagged. The scenery appears to be fairly good.

I've had a quick look round & yours seems to be a common problem. Can you post a copy of your CFS2.cfg [DISPLAY] entry. I might be able to suggest something.

Had send you a PM, but think you didn't see. Was not able to send you a cfs2.exe that might give you 32bit through SimV. If you send me a PM with your email-adress I'll send it to you by mail, if that doesn't work I'll send you a complete CFS2 with proper settings.

For Hagar:

[DISPLAY]
Device=NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060 (\\.\DISPLAY)
Mode=2560x1440x32
AntiAlias=1
HWTnL=1

For hertzie: did not receive your PM. Have sent you by PM my e-mail address, don't know if it worked.

PM did not work, I haven't seen it.

Download one of the planes I converted in the SimV-library to find my email-adress and send me yours.

Regards,

hertzie.

That looks similar to my own entry. You might like to try adding the line in Bold below.

[DISPLAY]
Device=NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3060 (\\.\DISPLAY)
Mode=1024x768x32
AntiAlias=1
HWTnL=1
Disable=0

If that doesn't work I'm out of ideas.

Many thanks to Hertzie who sent me a complete CFS2 package which completely solved all of my problems. My CFS2 is now working very well on Windows 10. Windows 10 is certainly not the ideal OS for CFS2 but I'm very glad to see that it is workable. Hats off to Hertzie!!!
