The AI planes seem to be too small on screen, I remember something about this a long time ago but have forgotten, can anyone be of help

I think you're talking about 3rd party AI aircraft in CFS1. The bug was fixed in CFS2 & rescaling should not be necessary. If you really want to do it the old method should still work.  http://www.simviation.com/lair/AI%20drones.htm
I warn you that this might also have the effect of slowing them down.
