  :-/ Lest we forget.....The Fleet Air Arm did not have a monopoly on this aircraft, which is actually an AD-4W of which 168 were built.   FAA only got 50 of them redesignated as AEW-1s.  The Navy and Marines were the primary operators of this machine.....and they were big on museum paint jobs.

Hi OW,

Think you will find that the 3W were ex USN with the old Avenger radar system, these were assigned to 778 sdn at Culdrose (CU on the tail) for testing. 4W was the improved version and theses were assigned to 849 sdn and went shipboard. It might be that as the 3W was converted from standard USN Skyraider, and the 4W was made to measure, its wing roots were moved to compensate for the radar dome and weight.
One time 849 sdn removed the radar pod to try to turn the aircraft into a troop mover, and the pilot nearly crashed as it was a complete 'pig' to fly...very nose heavy.
