color shifters?

Postby Falcon500 » Wed Dec 21, 2005 11:22 pm

I have flown CFS2 for quite some time now and for as long as i can remember my Iowa battleships ("Indiana")have been dark grey and few variations, which makes sense the paint on some ships was just a dark grey or as i call it "Navy grey". That was fine.

As i was in Mission Builder building away i noticed that pictures in the info section were much nicer looking "navy grey" red and some black. Which was fine too. they may have taken the photos well before the release and had changed things. After the mission building session i went into the CFS2 main folder to where the pictures were stored, i looked through them and there were pics in there that aren't in the game, didnt question that either.

Later i went into one of my missions that had most of the ships, i took off from a Essex and looked at the BB that was sailng in front of the carrier and

What do I do you ask? I struggle! Then destroy! Then try to put back together what I just broke on accident.....

Yes. Particularly if you have similar files in more than one area or more than one hard drive. In creating another version (retexture, weapons load, etc.) the CFS selection menu will often display the textures for the originating plane. For that reason, it's best to change the file names and their referencing in the .mdl, .air files, etc., to assist the computer's search for the appropriate files.

I've never noticed this problem but it's not likely I would worry about it. I checked out the Essex & like most of the default ships it has a very small hull texture in DXT1 format. This has a unique name (essex_hull.bmp) so should not conflict with anything else - unless you have a repaint of the Essex installed using an all-grey hull texture with the same file name.

PS. It's more likely the texture is not displaying at all for some reason. This could possibly happen in a graphics intensive mission.

In the photographic world this event is called "Solarization".
It could be that the sim is trying to alter the colours due to moonlight as opposed to daylight.

In words of the Moody Blues poem.....

"Red is grey and yellow white,
but we decide what is right,
and which is an illusion"
