Bombing Techniques

Postby Poppa_J » Tue May 10, 2005 12:47 pm

Folks:
I have had pretty good success with dive-bombing maneuvers in smaller planes. However, I am missing something when it comes to scoring hits with the large bombers. I have seen references to accessing the bomb sight in some of the multi-engine bombers, but I have yet to figure out which key or combination of keys gives me that access. Is it similar to CFS3, where you push one of the F keys? Or is it different for different planes? Or is it a matter of assigning the proper keys in the settings menu? Hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question; it's something that's really been bugging me.

You can activate the bomb trainer cheat by adding this entry to CFS2.cfg.

[CHEATS]
bomb_trainer=1

This will give you a 3-dimensional bombsight crosshair which is extremely accurate. The only problem is that it's permanently visible & you need to edit CFS2.cfg to switch it off. The easiest way is to install Cfo_Weather which adds the option to the CFS2 menu. http://www.cfsops.com/Modules/cfo_weather/Cfo_Weather_75.htm

There are also 3rd party panels featuring different types of bombsight if you hunt round for them. My Fox Four colleague Mike Eustace has been working on one for a future campaign. It's possible we will post this on the site as a separate download.

~S~

There's a few bombsights around that might work for you.

The kind that I've seen most often in CFS2 aircraft is a panel implementation that gives you a view down through a set of crosshairs. These are set to be accurate (-ish) at given air speeds and altitudes. Ken Austin's bomb sights (http://www.simviation.com/members/cfs2panels12.htm)

~S~ Ken,

Credit where credit's due! :)

I have to say, I once spent the best part of a day trying to calibrate my own version of this kind of sight and it drove me nuts! (And still didn't look as good graphically as yours does  ::))

That AF=Midway sight is worth a look though if you enjoy level bombing. It seems to use the same game data that controls the appearance of the bomb_trainer, so is really bang on in terms of accuracy. Someone must have done some very clever programming!

All the best,

Pads
