Why do jets from FS2000 fly like bricks with wings

Postby WeaponXAP » Thu Jan 01, 2004 2:59 am

ive only had this game for a week, thanks to my uncle, and I wanted to fly some more modern jets. I downloaded a few after reading that they could be incorporated into CFS2. Am I missing something?

Although CFS2 was never intended for jets I don't remember much problem with actually flying them. Please bear in mind that the DP file will add the appropriate weight of any weapons.

You might like to read the FAQ I wrote on common problems experienced with jets in CFS2.

These pages refer specifically to the special CFS2 jets that took literally months to develop for the Fox Four campaigns.

I read your FAQs, but they weren't what I was looking for. I really just need to know what the steps are in getting jets to control well in CFS2. I installed them, and a Lear45 file (a modified one from the Simviation FS2000 database, as my FS2000 CD was loaned out and returned with patterns of scratches resembling a brillo-pads effects, and consequently will not even load on my CD drive now), into my arcraft folder. Yet when I chose any of these planes, its like trying to fly a B52 in a dogfight. I dont have a joystick, and use a mouse, but i've always had great success with most planes before. I just need to figure out what hindrance is on my jets and solve the problem. Help!

The problem is probably what Hagar suggests...weight.

FS versions of .air files normally are setup for an approximate flying weight, weapons included. When CFS adds weight for the weapons loadout the plane ends up over gross.

You should also remember that the manuevering speeds (corner speed) on jets is much higher than prop planes...are you flying too slow?

I know that some people can apparently fly happily using the keyboard only but personally I couldn't control any type of aircraft without a joystick or yoke. The trim is very important & often overlooked. Any aircraft (including real aircraft & R/C models) will fly better & be easier to control when correctly trimmed. Also, not all the A/P functions work properly in CFS.

If you're interested in civil flying, especially with the passenger jets, I think you might be better off investing in FS2004 or FS2002.

PS. Whatever your decision a decent joystick with separate rudder control (twist grip) would be a worthwhile investment & my first priority.
