do you need to pay to use  on this site or is it my friend trying to scare me and does anyone know how to quit being a member

No, you are not required to pay for a membership to become a member here. You can download any file for free, but at a limited speed of 30 kb/s

You can pay to download at a higher speed if you want to, but no you don't have to pay anything to downlad at 30kb/s or post on the forums.

It's a post count thing, irrelevant to most but there are a few who spam away, just to become "resident"  ::)
