New forum software....

Postby Gypsy_Baron » Wed Jan 09, 2008 1:40 pm

I'm not really thrilled with the "new" forum software. In the first
place, I saw nothing wrong with the 'old" software.

The most noticable, or rather UN-noticable, feature in this new
package is the difficulty in distinguishing "followed"or "read"
links\articles from all the rest.

I'm using Firefox and can just barely see a difference in the dull blue
colors of the Topics and Threads.
With the old software it was quite easy to scan for the Topics
and Threads I had previously read and thus was following.

It may seem minor but it is a PITA and another strike for "newer is
not always better" argument.

Is there any way to adjust the "contrast" for the read vs unread
item headings?

Edit your profile.. There is an option in there under "templates" which is automatically set to forum default. You can change that to Yabb 2.1 which will revert to the old forum style.

Hope that helped  ;)

I feel very much the same every time the forum is upgraded. Eventually it tends to grow on me - and of course as Pete has said, this isn't the finished article yet. :)

Thanks for the input. I'll give it a shot.

Well I changed my preference to use the "old style: V2.1 but I see
absolutely no change whatsoever.

I can't see any difference in the headings of topics I have read and those
that I have not. This is VERY inconvenient when trying to track topics.
Since I read several forums I don't try to remember what topics I have
read in each one. I depend on the forum software to do that for me!

Avsims software does a good job of this....

Hi Paul,

I'm sorry you don't like the style - although this can be changed to whatever - this is the default & there are a few things to do before deciding whether to leave it as is or change it slightly.

One thing that applies in the PC & internet world is : If it's working it soon won't be - you have to upgrade on a regular basis.

I myself use some old software even though I have the newer versions - I find the old is less buggy so I use it. I don't upgrade just for the sake of it. Yabb2.1 which is the old one had some security flaws & left the site open to hacking - as one example. The newer version also allows some new gizmos which we can avail of in time.

I am confident this upgrade is the right thing to do. I hope in time nearly everyone will appreciate that.

There are still several things that need tweaking so 'this' is not quite it yet ;)

Thanks
