Hey pete, i have a really good idea on how to cut down on oversize images.

now you may be a bit lax on this, so it's just an idea. one that i implement on my site.

put a KB restriction onthe file upload page. ex: I have a limit of 125kb, if over, the picture won't upload.

just idea #2

Thats already kinda enforced. I don't think that the sum total of files uploaded are allowed to exceed 500kb which is the thread limit.

I may have an explanation why this is because I have experience it myself.  The system is not set up to allow exactly 500KB max upload but a max upload of 500000bytes which is actually about 488KB.  I think it was programed this way just because it was easier than programing the exact number of bytes in 500KB (which is 512000).  So, if an upload actually excedes 488KB it'll refuse it.

At least that is my understanding.

Sometimes when I try to upload and image I upload the full one and not the reduced one. When this happens I get this message (tries to upload huge image ;D) : (I had to cut the thing down the middle right in two to meet requirements)
