Expiring

Hi pete, I was wondering if we could speed up our forum by putting an expiry time on un-used accounts. AVSIM have done this with 90 days as the limit.
No rant, Dan

Can't see how that would speed it up. What slows the forums isn't unused accounts. Unused data is unused data. I'm a member on forums on about 3 sites - & this is the only one I have visited in the past 6 months. I may visit the yabb forum (where I haven't been for over a year)   next week & I'd be annoyed if my account was gone.  ::)

i would say if anything needs to be deleted its old photos and screenshots, i know a number of forums use a system where by an image which is 6 months old is deleted. Dont know if you have any way to do that with this forum Pete?

Unused accounts are normally cleaned out at the same time as old threads are archived...part of a general housecleaning.

Archiving the old threads can speed up a forum (less for the server to sort through), cleaning out unused names normally has no benefit except to allow re-use by someone else (or the original person who has forgot his password and no longer has access to the reminder email).

I have a feeling that photos and screenshots to get deleted after a certain amount of time. I've tried to dig up old screenshots and found them gone on several occasions.

I've found this also woody, a few have been "edited" shall I say, to erm, not quite what they were before.... and not by me!

Anyway, on this subject, I found a few old relics, and stuck them in the screenies section.
Until somebody deletes them also!  ::)

Paul. It's quite possible that this was not done intentionally. Unless you upload the images using files names unique to you it's all too easy for them to be overwritten. I've actually done this myself by accident & as one of the old regulars was suitably embarrassed. :o :-[

Since then I've used a special prefix & file naming formula for all images I upload to this site. Hopefully it would now be almost impossible for this to happen again but you never know. ::)

I think it's more that I have a personal thing about it. Look at it this way pete - If you value the forum you will post somthing every 90 days!

Pete, how about deleting old accounts that havn't been used at all?

for example, the only reason I can't use just plain 'Andrew' for my display name is because there's already an account with that name that's almost 2 years old, but doesn't have any posts at all

http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb/ ... ame=Andrew

I highly doubt that person is gonna come back and use that account

If Pete did what you're suggesting I wouldn't be able to come back occasionally & scare all the old regulars. :o
Most if the newer members would just think I'm another daft old fogey. They might be right at that. ;) 8)

Doug is right. The only option is to delete everything over a certain period - & that means users too.

& I value the Yabb forum for when I need it - even though I may only visit it once every 2 years. If my account was gone I would be annoyed & consider it a bad way to run a forum.

2 years may be a long time for a young guy like Dan - but for old fogies like Doug & I - 2 years is like 2 months.

I don't find these forums slow. If you do - have you tried a tracert?

Yeah, I guess so. I understand that you would be suitably incensed if you found that you had been deleted. I think that since I foolishly ( ???) got FS2002 Pro with a 500mhz P3 I am in a constant struggle for more speed. Anyway what is a 'tracert'?

i know VB boards delete pictures from posts over time, but i find that extremly annoying. . .especially if it is something like a tutrorial you are trying to see

I don't think you really understand my above post

What I meant was deleting accounts 2 years old with 0 posts, that does NOT incude old accounts with 2500 some posts. If this was done, old grumpy wouldn't be deleted because that account has more then 0 posts.

But Pete just explained that there isn't an option to do just that.

Anyway what is a 'tracert'?

'tracert' is TRACE ROUTE from one network computer to another. In windows you can do this by going to Start - Run & type 'tracert www.whateversite.com' ... & watch the screen

Any '*' or 'timed out' means there is a jam at that point. The internet is very much like a real highway - with occasional traffic problems along the way. The main difference is the Net communicates at faster than lightning speed (you can connect to a server 12,000 miles away in seconds) but you still get slow points along the way & tracert enables you to see where these problem points are.

What I meant was deleting accounts 2 years old with 0 posts, that does NOT incude old accounts with 2500 some posts. If this was done, old grumpy wouldn't be deleted because that account has more then 0 posts.

That would be a good option - but this version of YABB (& it's the latest version) doesn't have this option.
