Premier Membership Download Speed

Postby TerryW » Mon Feb 13, 2006 5:31 am

Hi guys!...having a real problem with download speeds that I've tried over the last couple of months to resolve myself. Have visited this forum hoping to find someone with similar problems, but without luck. Some background (sorry in advance for long post):

I've been a Premier member since Pete introduced it. I have hi-speed cable, Windows XP SP2, IE6 with all patches. I do not use download managers. I have a Router and MS's firewall enabled.

My download speeds at the Premier site have been decreasing regularly since last Fall. When I log onto the site with UserID and password, the Simviation Premier logo is visible at the top of the page, so I know I'm on the Premier site. My download speeds are now in the range of 9 to 16 KBS, but only on this site!

I've communicated with my ISP who remotely monitored my modem, but found no problems. I regularly download from other sites at anywhere from 150 KBS to, at one point, a whopping 2.2MBS.

This morning (5:30 a.m Atlantic, where everyone else west of this zone are still likely asleep) I downloaded the recently released P-47 (ca. 25MB) at a resolutely steadfast 16KBS. When completed, I exited the site, went immediately to FSimCafe (a freeware site) and downloaded a 9MB scenery file at an average speed in excess of 160 KBS.

I've checked and re-checked my firewall, my modem has been checked...I'm totally out of ideas. As I mentioned, it is only on this site, and for the past number of months that I've had this problem. Anything I've tried to download from the Premier site does not achieve a speed above a maximum of 36KBS.

I'd sure like to snag Holger's Alps and Himalayas mesh, but at this speed, I can't even think of trying.

Would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Thanks, all the best,
Terry

Hi Terry - Sorry to hear of your problems.

I can only guess as to what your problem is but it isn't due to limits on our members file server.  Nothing has changed there.

Just to check I have just downloaded a file from the members area - 4.6MB - 20 seconds & the reading was around 240KPS

Can I suggest a tracert? Go to start - all programs - accessories - command prompt.

Type 'tracert 205.252.250.26' & then 'tracert 63.217.28.218' & watch what happens.

If there are any pauses ('*') or timeouts that is where your probllem lies. If your tracert takes a long time to get going the problem could lie within your own system.

We'll resolve this.

Thank you, Pete.
Ran tracert (and ping)...after doing some research on the web (had never heard of those items before), the results don't seem unusual.

The two tracert commands went through 13 hops, each with a timeout between hops 8 and 10. They were very smooth, and completed quite quckly....most were 40 to 80 ms, with only one at 119ms.

The two ping tests were 0% loss and average time of 75 ms.

Anyways, I have kept the results if there is specific info you could use from them....thanks,
Terry

Pete,
Thought I'd follow up on my initial post...finally found the problem...a bum router! Took it off my network and my d/l speeds are back up to 400 kbs (what I got while downloading the 23mb Sikorsky Aviate just now).

All the best,
Terry
