I know this is going to sound a little over the top, but when I began using il-2 I was always getting shot to bits.
Then I watched some dogfight tactics  on youtube (made using il-2) and my technique improved greatly.

If you want new skins for your aircraft visit canonsskins. It provides great, high quality skins for almost all il-2 aircraft.

Yes, waiting till you see the whites in their eyes is turning out to be an unwise battle tactic.  ;D ;)

Which version of IL-2 is the best?

1946.

It has all of the expansion packs included, and only costs $10.

almost 300 flyable planes from every country in WWII that had some.

Lot's of experimental early jets also. 8-)

I'm gonna have to look for it at walmart, bestbuy, or any other department store that I can think of

Amazon.com is reliable and safe if you don't want to drive to Wally-world or Best Ripoff.

There is a 'Invincibility' option in the options menu.

But it kind of takes the challenge out of the game. :(

The scenery is actually quite nice, and yes, with the cheat on, you could have a very exciting tour with no worries of death & destruction. ;) ( I'm going to have to try this now.)
It doesn't cover the entire world, but it is large enough that it will take some time to see it all.  :)

I got my copy from steam ,direct to drive, for $9.99, and haven't had any problems since getting it figured out.
Amazon has the disc version at the link Sean posted above.  :)
