A good thing to start out with is the Deltaglider (Not DGIV, that's hard). Just take off, go straight up (90 degrees, hold it, killrot is your friend). Cut off the engines at 50 kilometers, hit Horizon Level. Once level hit killrot again. Once the nose starts going down by itself (HL can't hold it), turn off all autopilots, nose down about 20 to ten degrees, and turn off thruster control. Then just use engines as nescessary to line up and land. If done correctly, there will be no reentry, and when you come down in HL, you will descend straight down, in other words, directly over your landing site. This is a very good way to learn. If you get good at it, try higher engine cutoffs, and orbital missions. Work your way up to the more realistic DGIV.
