Not seen this mentioned anywhere. I know a lot of people use IrfanView for resizing & saving screenshots etc. so it might be useful.

I just updated to the latest IrfanView 4.20. http://www.irfanview.com/
It has several new features, the most interesting one being a 'Save for Web' option like Photoshop, PSP & Paint.NET. This seems to work very well & takes out all the guesswork when trying to save images at the highest possible quality while keeping within the forum file size limits. You can either adjust the output file size with the familiar quality slider or click the 'Compress to size' button & type in the desired size in Kb. It's a plugin so in order to use it you need to install the latest full plugin package posted here. http://www.irfanview.com/plugins.htm

This is the new UI from File/Save for Web.

The plug-in seems to have a mind of its own when it comes to compressing screenies.

Sorry. I have no idea what you're talking about.

Setting a value of 145 KiB gives me 158 KB. Setting a value of 140 KiB also gives me 158 KB for some reason.

It might depend on how you measure the file size. It seems accurate enough to me. There's no reason it should be any different for screenshots than photos or any other image.

Even if it's not perfectly accurate it's a great improvement on previous versions.

How can it depend on how you measure the filesize, if 145 and 140 both come out the same way?

Forget it. I'm too tired to argue. You're not forced to use the program.

I'm not saying I'm forced to use it, I am using it, and I have for as long as I can remember.

All I'm saying, is that the plug-in isn't working as it should.

Have you tried the similar features in Photoshop or PSP? It can only control the compression within certain limits. I don't think anyone claimed that you can get it exact to a Kb.
