Trying to Edit an Image

OK, I know there are people here who are a lot better than me at this...so I figured I would just ask.  I am trying to edit this image, and I can do it in PSP but when I go to save it it seems to not save.  All I want to do is get rid of the white around the image (and within the O around the duck) so the image is transparent instead of white backed.  I can delete all those white area's in PSP with the lasso tool and then copy and overlay it on a transparent background.  Once I merge the image and save it...it is white again.  Does anyone know how to do this...and might be willing to fix this image for me (and tell me how they did it in the process).

For those of you unfamiliar, this is the old logo for the University of Oregon which is my alma mater.

Thanks!!!

Have you tried saving it with a transparent background as a .gif file?

It's probably not completely perfect, but it doesn't look too bad

OK, thanks guys.  Was it not working because I was saving it as a jpg and not a gif?  If so, why won't a jpg work?

I think JPEG's save the background as well whereas the GIF's have a transparent background...It's the same with my avatar...It matches the background of the forums to match ;)
