Questions about photo uploading

Hi, im a bit of a newbie at uploading and resizing my screenshots and I was just wondering a few things.

First, the photo has to be 100k, and some of mine are over 5mb. How do I reduce this?

Second, is making the screenshot 800 pixels wide as simple as cropping in photo shop or paint?

Thanks,
Nigel

When I make screenshots, I put them into paint and save them as JPG or PNG. Dont save as BMP

JPG and PNG are known for the higher conversion, meaning it gives a lower file size. My pics end up being betwen 60-120K

on the upload page HERE, there is a link to irfanview, which is a very handy tool, like paint but much better which lets you resize images and save them.

To resize, open your image and press Ctrl+r, type in width as 800 px and press OK.

To save under 100Kbs hit the save as button, and adjust the quality slider to somewhere between 1 and 12. You might have to play around with this a bit to get it under 100Kbs. If it is not, just save it again at a lower quality setting :)

Any questions, just ask :)

PS. If you have photoshop, after resizing hit the "save for web" button in the file menu, then you can play around with quality from 1-100 and it gives you a preview of the file size so there is less playing around ;)

Open you pic in photoshop and press ALT + CTRL + I (picture size). Set the width to 800 pixels and make sure the middle box is checked. Then press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + S (save for web). Click on the little button with the traingle in it in the top right corner of the pop-up window. Then click 'optimize for filesize' and set it to 100 K. ;)
