I have never used GIMP so I can not give you any tips. However, I can tell you that you should use any method that works best for you. If the "intelligent scissors tool" gives you the quality you're looking for, then why use anything else?

The 'inteligent scissor' tool will give you really jaggy edges...even if picture is taken infront of completely monotonal backround. But...cutting it out by hand takes sooo long, and is sooo boring!! So it depends how importent the quality is i guess

Lay a path around the picture, make a selection of it and cut it out.
