Beautiful and original! I like it! My only "critique" would be the heat blur. I think you should use the blur tool to smoothe the edges abit. ;)

personaly to soften the edges i would of made the heatblur on a new layer (copy and paste the selection you watned to blur and put it on top)  apply my blur effects and use a realy soft erasor with a large diameter.

but good attempt none the less :D

Well with real heat haze, you don't get a particularly blurred 'edge' on it. It's quite a sharp change between the distorted area and the unaffected area.

It seems that when a Harrier hovers close to the ground the heat blur isn't concentrated beneath the exhausts.
