Anyone have an idea how they would have created a "collage" like this back in TV's golden era?

Anyone have an idea how they would have created a "collage" like this back in TV's golden era?

I bet if you gave people today who do all the crazy news graphics or tv graphics the technology they had back then they would not be able to make anything!

What I really wonder about isn't the title screen stuff, but all text in old movies like subtitles or credit titles over live film.  Pretty easy to do today, but without computers how can you do it?
