Sky/Cloud/Ground Textures

Postby Sir_Jon » Sun Jul 09, 2006 9:39 am

Hi all,
In most of my screens, the textures for the ground are a real letdown. Can anyone help me by pointing me in the direction of the best freeware replacement textures until I can get GE.
Thanks,
John.

I can suggest Silver Wings though some ppl prefer Lennart's Textures (which I am yet to analyze because I find it a real bother to install and set up). There is also VOZ which can be used in any area similar to the Australian sections textured. For ex. The Lush Green section of VOZ can be applied to almost any Rain-forested area in the world.

the SRTM terrain mesh. not only improves mountain coverage, but ground terrain at 70mm satellite photographs from 1998 (compared to the 1992 shots used by FS.) the next FS I read is supposed to have 2005 satellite imagery. thats all i know.

the mesh helps. it really does. unfortunately it's down at the moment. just wait for good ol' pete to get the server running again, and follow the steps provided by my visual tutorial, or by the steps in the readme.

I find that VOZ Northern region textures work well in most parts of the world and look very good.  Ive replaced my woods, water and desert textures with different textures, used TreeGen for trees, the clouds that I have a Skylight (I think they are more realistic than FSW) and a really small sized (16KB) Cumulus1 for better performance, water is the fairly new Xtreme Water (I think thats what its called), and my sky textures are the awesome BlueSky v2 textures (avsim)

Lennarts are definately nice, but the snowy mountain textures leave somthing to be desired...

Yer I don't want to use Silverwings, don't like it. I was not sure which is better, Lennarts or Voz, but I think I will go with Voz for the time being.

Xtra water is the best recent one, however Ashar's water is pretty good too (Where has he been recently? Did I miss something... ???)

I never understood lennarts textures, but I tried Silver wings, good textures, but not so good, higher up for heavies.

Cheers,
Alex

BTW, I hope your planning on getting GE Pro!  ;D

When I used Lennarts I just placed them directly in, took a while but it was better that way

If i remember correctly, BlueSphere is best for high up, but since I usually fly down low I never liked those textures.

PS:  I believe Ashar went on vacation a few weeks ago...

If I remember correctly, Bluesphere is merely default edited to look better from high altitudes.

Reality pack is OKAY, but the textures are incerdibly repetitive adn autogen doesnt line up properly
