hey guys

what do you think is the best Freeware program, hopefully with simple editing tools, and an easy capture ability

(not Irfanview)

thanks
james

And Id agree!  I can get amazing edits with picasa merely by changing colors and using effects

I use sharpshooter you can get it http://nomadsoft.info.se

Current version: 2.11
Platform: Windows 98/ME/2000/NT/XP

SnapShooter is a small and easy freeware application that is able to capture the active window or screen directly to a file on your disk, rather than having to manually fire up an image processing app and save it from the clipboard your self. An excellent choice for managing screen captures from within games!

Features

   * Save to BMP, JPEG, GIF, TIFF and PNG
   * Specify JPEG compression level
   * Automatically resize captured images
   * Save to specified folder
   * Specify custom image naming pattern
   * Save from clipboard or directly from screen
   * Minimize to tray
   * Start on Windows startup
   * Extensive logging

I would have to say the GIMP is the closest thing to photoshop after you get used to it. Its missing some key features and abilities that photoshop has but what can you expect?? Photoshop is $600 Gimp is free  ;D  I used gimp before I got Photoshop and i was VERY happy with how it handled. Oh and if i rember correct it can handle photoshop files which is a BIG plus for any program.
