Soui's 2nd try

Postby Souichiro » Thu Aug 31, 2006 1:39 pm

Hi all! Now Some people have been raving about my moon lately and I think this is one of my best ever moon shots. I also entered it in the comp some time ago in which it wasn't chosen....

Some might argue that there isn't so much going on in this shot.. For me? I just like the atmosphere

Anyway

I voted no for a few reasons.
First, a good rule of thumb when setting up a shot is not to cut off pieces of the plane, in this case the right wing tip. I see this done too many times, and it always ruins an otherwise excellent shot. Of course, this does not apply for close-up shots, but this is not one, and the entire plane is trying to be shown. A different angle would have helped.

There is too much dead space below the plane and in the upper right corner. Not only is the dead space life-less, but it forces the moon and the plane to be a little constrained (with the plane on top of the moon instead of maybe being separate).  Having some wisps of Cirrus or Stratus clouds would have helped a lot to the background, but that is just one example. (Edited stars help too)

The time of day is nice, but still dull. Some color and lighting editing could have fixed that, and you dont necessarily need Photoshop to do that. Just bump up the contrast and lighting a bit, and maybe the saturation of color. Of course, with PS you can do a lot more, but this shot doesn't require that much light tweaking.

Still a nice general shot, and like you said, the atmosphere is very nice in this one!

Hope you dont mind the critique.  ;)

I never mind that!

It's critiques like these which makes us better artists, I would even like to mention that you missed the fact that it's flying without any lights on. This shot isn't perfect in technique by far and i know that.. The shot is also quite old and I think I've improved since then. The sole reason I put it here is because of the atmosphere in it which I really liked..

About the lighting... I'm not really keen on editing my shots... Mainly because I suck at it..  I know you're much better at it? If you want you can change this pick in anyway you want or at least change the lighting? I'd love to see what you can do with it!

Maybe i can simulate the same setting but then improve the shot... Might be nice!

Thanks for the feedback Spitfire!!

I voted 'Nope' but it was a close call.

I don't think the moon stands out enough, I think the shot would have been improved if you'd put on the lights and taken the shot with a darker sky (therefore a brighter moon).

EDIT - Hope you don't mind but I had a quick play in PS and came up with this. It's not great because I've had to darken manually as opposed to doing it naturally hence some strange colour lines due to heavy modification but there you go...

I think certain screenart doesn't have to be technically perfect to be beautiful. Look at what Picasso, Warhol, andmany other abstract artists acheived without using "standardized" or normal artistic perameters. Sometimes a shots mood and feeling can carry it a long way, as I feel this shot does. I give it a very "artsy" yes.

Editing does not do this shot justice Soui ...

The mood this shot breathes is fantastic but I think that if you would've lit up the plane more it would stand out a lot better in this shot.

I voted no. Sorry.

I can't agree with that.  Sometimes cutting of pieces off the a/c (most of the time wingtips)  is necessary to create the best composition (avoiding empty spaces in the pic)

on topic : I remember when Soui posted this shot in the comp several months ago.  Everyone was amazed by that moon.  A yes from me :)

I like the edit Spitfire! Really do! It's fun what people can do with my shots.. Mainly because I'm not planning on doing that myself

Only thing for me is i think the moon could have been better (seemed blurry), and if you had made it night it would be 10 times better  ;D

I voted no. The basics of the picture is exellent. However, try to keep the whole plane in the pictures, and maybe try it later at night so there is alittle more contrast.

To top that off you could of done the same type of edit Spitfire222 did ;)
