Sunrise/Sunset: What's your Style?

Postby Clipper » Sun Jul 09, 2006 3:58 am

Taking that breathtaking sunrise/sunset shot can be quite a challenge. Seems so often the pic comes out too dark or washed out with almost no contrast... orange saturation can be a major pain as well. (see pic below) It also seems the sun and "jaggies" go hand in hand. So I thought we could put to-gether a clinic on how YOU set up your sunrise/sunset shots. Try to find or create a screenshot that you feel is a good example of your style. Then post it on this thread (thumbnails recommended). Describe the add-ons you're using.. example: FSSkyworld etc, and what you feel is an effective way to set up a great sunrise/sunset shot.   :)

In this pic i'm using FSSkyworld Fixed Dawn and Dusk #2.
By adding the cumulus clouds (cumulus f set 3 FSSkyworld as well) I tried to improve the contrast in the aircraft and create a kind of "bush pilot" feel to the pic. I think the orange skies became a bit too saturated and the ground scenery is far too dark. I think I created mood I was looking for, but the pic is lacking detail and light. What do you think?  :)

Wow Clipper that backdrop in the sky is amazing!!! I agree about the ground being to dark but that does not matter IMO. I would say that to make that shot better, the aircraft should be a bit clearer or a bit lighter, not by much but enough.

I have noticed that often when I take dawn/dusk shots, the textures on the planes get all blurry is there a way to fix that?

The problem with these pictures is that they are best viewed in darker circumstances. I'm looking at the picture displayed here in bright sunlight, and I'm missing all the detail...

I tend to like dusk/sunset time better than sunrise. The coulours are warmer at dusk. Playing with the exact time can be rewarding to. there's a moment when the sun still sheds enough light on the scene to make the plane visible, but already has that evening feel to it. This time also creates some dramatic shadows on hill-rich scenery...
