Yes, they are real. I am no scientist and so cannot give a good explanation but I can tell you that back in 1966 when I started flying the Boeing 727 for Eastern Air Lines I was intrigued that its wings could flex as much as they did, even then. I loved that airplane and those "soft" wings made for a wonderful ride. I'm sure the new metal and fiber technologies can only have made things better.
